Train from Zagreb to Bled.

I am trying to book a round-trip train ticket from Zagreb to Bled and raileurope.com is asking me to contact their customer service. The problem is if I book using the customers service, they charge a $15 call center fee!!! I guess there's no way to get around it!

Anyway, my question is whether I need to make a reservation for these trains? It costs $11/person (on top of the ticket price) and I am travelling in mid-September with my wife and a 3-yr old. I am buying a seat for my 3-yr old. Is the first class significantly better for a three hour trip or second class is fine too?

Any advice?

Why buy the tickets now if you are traveling in September. You will have no problems buying the ticket when you are there.

It has been noted a number of times that Raileurope charges a lot for tickets that are much cheaper if you buy in Europe. Since you are not traveling on a high demand route, I would just wait till you are in Zagreb and buy the tickets there. This will end up saving you a lot of money. Also, reservations normally only cost 3 or 4€ each so again cheaper getting in Europe.

Years ago when we were in Zagreb, the TI directed us to a great travel agency where all the folks spoke English. We were looking to buy train tickets to Lubjlana and onwards to Salzburg. The lady got us something called a Star ticket which had a significant discount and actually had a return portion if we wanted to use it. The lesson here is that unless it is a heavily traveled route, I wait till I'm in Europe to buy the ticket and a lot of times you end up with discounts/tickets that you would not hear of in any of the guidebooks.

Does anyone remember how much did the train ticket cost when it was purchased in Zagreb? And which year?

Rail Europe is quoting me $57/person for First Class and $38/person for Second Class for one-way. Reservation fee is $11/person one way. And then $18 for shipping the tickets and $15 for call center fee!

Total round trip amount for 3 Second Class tickets: $289
