We looking at a Baltics tour that includes two nights in Moscow and two nights in St. Petersburg before moving west toward Poland. Can less than two full days in each city do them justice? Can such a tour even cover the major sites? Need help from anyone who can shed some light on our dilemma!
I am afraid that two nights for each city is not enough. Moscow is huge and St. Petersburg has so many sights.
Russia is too tough to get to short change it. I think you either need to spend more time there or choose 1 city. If you choose one - go with St Petersburg - easier/more efficient to get to. Take the overnight ferry from Tallin. When in St Petersburg - look up Peters walks we were there for 4 days and took 4 different walks. Happy travels
That's much too short. My husband and I spent 7 nights in St Petersburg and would go back. It is a wonderful city. I don't see how you could do it justice with 2 or less days.
We're slowly being talked into longer stays in both cities, and maybe doing this on our own. Does anyone have hotels recommendations for St. Pete's and Moscow?
If you are on your own in Russia you will need a visa. Visas for Russia are expensive and complicated to get. So keep that in mind for your planning. You might want to review the current discussion on this site under Russian Visa.
Had a great apartment in St. Pete for 4 nights - http://www.oksanas.net/
Was language a problem in St. Pete or Moscow? How about getting around the city on public transportation?
Language could be a problem especially because they are using different alphabet and you will see very few signs in English. I recommend to learn at least cyrilic alphabet if not basic russian so you will be able to read signs like street names, subway stations etc.
