The last day of our river cruise ends in budapest on Aug 8th. We would like to stay several more days and tour the city and surrouondng areas. Does anyone have a recommendation for a guide to take us around the city and surrounding areas?

When we took RS Eastern European tour a couple of years ago, we had an assistant guide from Budapest who now is a full guide for RS. He was wonderful and much better than the full guide. Unfortunately, I can not find his name now.
I might suggest you e-mail the RS headquarters travel desk and tell them that you are thinging doing a Budapest city tour and wonder if they would be so kind as to give you the name of one of their guides who lives in Budapest. Slim chance that will work but if you PM me I will try to find his name when I get back to Seattle.
Good luck and we did really enjoy Budapest, more so that the over tourist saturated Prague.

There are lots of personal tour guides at any of the large tourist spots. Especially at the end of Grand Boulevard. You can hire them on the spot. I didn't use any of them, but they're certainly around the city.

Good luck! Budapest is a wonderful city.

In Budapest tour guides must pass a test and be certified. There are a number of them listed online that Google will locate for you. Any of them that have received certification are probably going to be satisfactory. I would contact them online and inquire as to availability for your dates, prices, etc. The guides are particularly helpful if you elect to spend a day traveling to the surrounding areas.

I am currently in Budapest and am using an excellent guide. Her name is Andrea Hadik her email is [email protected] . Her cell # 36-70-2130634. I highly recommend her, my friends and I have used her for trips in Budapest and away from the city. She has perfect English and knows so much history we're seeing more and learning more than I thought possible. Feel free to send me a private email if you would like more information.

Great Tour Guide in Budapest Budapest in January is not considered the best time to go, but having one of the best tour guides can still bring it to life. Barbara ([email protected]) certainly did this for me and three of my friends. I found her on this Graffiti page and contacted the commenter who wholly endorsed her. We were not disappointed. We booked a full-day walking tour to see the highlights of Budapest, and it was like having a friend showing us around. We used public transportation to get around to the sights and mixed in with the locals (be sure to buy a day pass for the transport -- it's cheap!). She is upbeat, energetic, and very knowledgeable about the sites we saw. She also likes antiques so we hit it off quick, since I have the same hobby.
Of course, one of the benefits of visiting Budapest in winter was, that that the tourist crowds were gone. I would definitely consider using her again as our guide in Hungary.
