Tour Companies to Romania

Has anyone traveled with an established tour company that takes groups through Romania? We'd like experienced guides who would teach us history along the way, but we're also hoping to visit with some friends living in the country. Too bad Rick Steves' Eastern European tour doesn't go there. Suggestions?

My husband and I worked with a private tour guide, named Laura. Romania was an amazing country, well worth the effort of figuring things outs. It is hard to find tour books and websites for Romania so we were traveling a little blind but managed just find. Flying into Tirgu Mures and staying in Sighisora. We took the train to Brasov and met Laura and our driver at the train station. They took us to various castles--Peles and Bran, we tour Brasov, etc. Wish we had more time. Here is her contact information. Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks for the reply and information! I'm curious what it cost you for the guide service while you were in Romania.

You might look into Adventures Abroad, a Vancouver based tour company with a philosophy similar to Rick's. I used them for an Egypt tour and liked it a lot. They offer guided tours of Romania. Appears it would be possible to do 5 days with them, beginning in Bucharest early on day 1 and ending there after breakfast on day 6. The tour visits various Romanian cities in between. Adventures Abroad sells their tours in segments that can be strung together, so they may be able to accomodate you even if it's not an official tour on their schedule.

I traveled there about two years ago, however not with a tour. Simply rented a car and drove all through the countryside. Arrived in Bucharest and began from there. It was very intriguing and extremely inexpensive. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the people were great. A diverse mix of farmers and townspeople. We had to share the road with the horses and carts in all the villages and the tales you hear about the 'wild dogs' are true. They are everywhere. Take some earplugs if the barking would bother you. The Transylvania area is beautiful. I think I still have my travel images from Romania and Budapest on my website. You can view them at terrykathrynlawrence.com
I am a photographer so there were many unique things about Romania and its people for me to photograph. Some of the towns still had many apartment complexes that appeared so grey and 'communist'. Quite interesting! Then there was Brasov, a college town, that was so 'European' with trendy food and restaurants. I loved it.

We will be going to Romania at the end of our river trip that ends in Rousse, Bulgaria (across the Dabaube from Giurgiu, Romania)on April 27, 2009.

Normally, we rent a car and drive around to see the countryside as Terry did. Frank and Jody took guided tours. Helen is still searching for a guide group. We must decide which one is best for us.

Terry, where did you return your car? In our case we would want to pick up our car in Romania and return it in Budapest. We would then spend time in Romania, Croatia and Serbia on our way back to Budapest. This is probably too much as our plane in Budapest May 6th, but it is fun to plan and then begin to eliminate destinations as the time gets closer to leaving.

Hi,
As far as renting the car, I picked it up at the airport in Bucharest then drove all around the country and dropped it in near the border of Hungary.(I will have to look up the name, can't remember, but I think it was something like Singasora??)You cannot take the car out of the country, so we then took a train directly to Budapest and stayed in the city and walked the whole time. Also took a boat trip up the river and a city tour, but mostly walking. I think I used Budget for the car. Driving there was easy and roads were mostly two lane and sufficiently marked. In Bucharest it was a bit crazier but I have driven all over Europe and Great Britan so I am used to it. It was a great place to visit and I would be happy to answer any other questions.

Hi Helen:

you may inquire with Compass Travel Romania in Bucharest. Their web site is:
www.tours-of-romania.com

They have excellent quality tours for small groups, all American. And great tour guides.
