Good morning, We will be driving in both countries this month. Are the toll booths manned so tolls can be paid in cash if necessary or are they unmanned needing use of credit/debit card only? Have heard that many toll booths in Europe use only pin/chip cards that we do not have. Thanks for any help. Dave

In Croatia you have both, in Slovenia the toll booths are for trucks only, you just drive past, but you need to buy and attach a toll sticker to your windshield BEFORE you enter a motorway! If you're renting the car in Slovenia, it'll already come with the vignette, as the sticker is called, if not, it costs €15 for a week or €30 for a month. And watch out, fines are steep if you are caught without one and the toll inspectors show no mercy to offenders.
Thank you, Dejan, Is it okay to send you a private message as I have some additional questions? Dave
We bought the vignette at the first place in each country we could, and had no problem. I assume that the cops allow you to go to the first place. We were never stopped except when I got into the argument with the Turkish guy in Vienna.
Dejan and Paul, Thanks for the tips. Bought our vignette at a truck parked at the border crossing. Very easy and no tolls to be paid in Slovenia.
Had a wonderful time today in Ljublana today with really good fish lunch from the food truck at the outdoor market. Thanks againfor the help.
We entered Austria on the autobahn between Munich and Salzburg. We stopped at the first place - a big truck stop - and purchased our vignette. As we left the parking lot, there were inspectors immediately after we merged back onto the highway fining people without vignettes on their cars - so yes, they let you get to the first place but no further. I'm not sure about other countries but you only need a vignette to drive on the autobahn in Austria. If you stay off the highways, you don't need the sticker. The sticker is cheap enough that I'd only skip the vignette if I didn't really plan much driving anyway and could easily avoid the autobahn.
