I'm thinking of including 8 days in Greece to the end of a backpacking trip. I would take the ferry from southern Italy hopefully to Santorini for 2 nights, then Paros (as suggested on another thread), then up to Athens where I would fly home. After traveling 33 days throughout France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, does this sound like a good idea or should I save it for another trip? I would end up in Greece towards the middle of October. We are planning to be in Santorini about the 10th of October. Were surprised to learn that one of the hotels we were considering is closing that week. It is my understanding that the island begin shutting down in mid-October. The ferry schedule can become irregular do to weather and lack of demand. I think that portion needs to be planned carefully so that you not caught on one of island when your plane is taking off.

By mid-October much of what people enjoy on the islands will have slowed way down, or possibly even closed for the winter. The weather will be windy and possibly a bit chilly at night. On the other hand, it will be peaceful and inexpensive.

Thank you, that's really good to know. I think I may save Greece then...I was hoping for nice, warm weather and since it is kind of a fly by the seat of my pants trip, I wouldn't want to get stuck. I can add some days to the rest of my trip so its not so rushed.
