Tirana, Albania

Any help re flights from the u.s. to tirana, albania? Will probably fly into london or into greece, then fly to tirana.(staying at a friend's home in tirana) Flights are expensive- any tips, info or websites that would help me plan?

Do you have to fly? If you have time, I'm sure you can travel by bus from Athens/Greece. We were there last year but traveled by road from Montenegro and then traveled out of Albania onto Lake Ohrid, also by road.

I've travelled to Tirana (from Toronto, ON) twice. The first time I flew to Frankfurt, Germany and then on to Tirana. The second time, I travelled by air both ways via Milano (Malpensa Airport)...a route I'd recommend. It's just a short hop from Milan to Tirana and the length of the stopover en route is very manageable.

You can also fly to Athens, Greece and then directly to Tirana. (I visited the former city while living in Tirana.) I considered travelling by road from Athens to Tirana, but it's rather circuitous and long (timewise) due to the roads...no double-lane divided highways. Aso, you'll likely be held up at the border (2 customs offices - one for each country) for quite some time if you enter Albania by road.

I definitely would not recommend travelling into Albania by train. They are very out-dated!

This info may be too late for you, but it might be of use to someone else.

I was in Tirana April, 2008. We took a ferry from Trieste, overnight, a lot of fun and relaxing.
It is expensive to get into Albania by air. We flew out to Budapest via Rome.
Enjoy, Albanians are wonderful people.
