I think most everyone here will tell you that you're trying to cram an awful lot into each day, but it's definitely doable. Personally, I would get tired of that many organized tours, but if it's history you're after and you don't mind not going at your own pace, then you'll be fine. In terms of itinerary, I think you're in pretty good shape. April 20 will likely be a long day. I think you might be a little short on time in Athens anyway (looks like you've essentially got one half day - the 19th - to wander around), so you might think about forgetting the Cape Sounion tour and hitting more sights in the city.
Tim, Thanks for yor thoughts I was thinking the same thing. I know we are tight on time. We originally were just going to go to Greece but thought we would try both during the Spring break. I have never done origanized tours before. Thought I would take a look at it. if we were to do it on or own or a combination of both any suggestions ? What could we manage on our own and what tours could be eliminated with enjoying sites and some down time in the cities?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!! thanks
We've found that if you've got Rick's books and he gives a "self-guided tour" of a place, you can usually get enough out of those to make it worthwhile. However, it really just depends on preference. I guess I'd recommend keeping the tours in Rome (you'll likely want to double back to a few places after the tour is over, but a tour guide is a good way to get oriented). As for Athens, if it's just the Acropolis and the museum, I think you'd be able to do that on your own (the groups walking through the Acropolis always seemed crazy). If it walks you through more of the city, it might be worth it. I felt Rick's walkthroughs were more than good enough though. Cape Sounion and Delphi are also up to you. We didn't go to Sounion, but Delphi can definitely be done on your own. But if you don't want to have to take care of transportation on your own, then a tour would work fine.
