I will be traveling to the Czech Republic and Latvia this summer and will stay with host families. What are some things I should be aware of culturally before I go to make the most out of my trip? Thanks
Have you considered asking the organization that is arranging your host families to introduce you to a student that did a summer exchange in the Czech Republic and Latvia last summer?
Does your organization have students from Czech Republic/Latvia studying in the USA now? Can you ask if you can talk to those students?
I was an exchange student while in high school, and talking to exchange students really helped me prepare for my year abroad.
You can also check out some travel books from the library, and specifically look at the sections dealing with culture.
Remember to be flexible, try all foods even if they look gross, and pack lightly. :)
My wife an I spend 2 weeks in the Czech Republic in October 2009. We took small key tokens and frig magnets from our state. Also the people of Czech Republic love our President, he has been there twice now. You can order on-line some pins with our President's picture on them and they were a hugh hit.
