Taxis in Athens Greece

Are taxis honest about the cost of fares in Athens. Should I take taxis that only have meters in them, or do they even have meters?
Thanks for any advice, Ellis

I disagree. Unless you speak Greek and look Greek YOU WILL GET TAKEN.

Yes they use the meters.

But they will take you on the 10 mile tour to your destination and take all your money using the higher rate. It is a huge scam.

Leave the taxis to the Greeks, use the metro.

Taxi drivers in Athens are a shifty bunch of rascals, so beware. Make sure the meter is set to #1-day rate if you're travelling between 5am and 11pm. If you can get one to commit to a set price you're better off, but don't count on it. Average fare is 35 euro to Central Athens. The Airport Express Bus #95 is 3.2 euro. The metro is closed down to the airport but you can take the Suburbain Train instead for about 6 euro to the Neratziotissa Station, then buy a Metro ticket there for the Green Line train for about one euro for the rest of the trip into town.
