My wife and I will be landing at the airport in Athens on Tuesday night, May 6, 2008 and will be looking for a taxi around midnight.
Question #1: Is it difficult to find a taxi at midnight?
Question #2: Are there taxis we should avoid? Some cities have both registered and un-registered taxis.
Question #3: We understand the fee from the airport to a downtown hotel is 40 euros at night. Is this correct? How do you avoid unnecessary fees beyond the 40 euros?
Question #4: We will also be using a taxi to go from the port in Athens to the bus terminal. Any tips?
Thanks in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR'S!
James Michael
1 - No problem, there are always Taxis at the airport, day or night.
2 - Only get into a desinated taxi with a TAXI sign on top and a meter.
3 - About 40 EUR should do it BUT agree the price before you get in, write it down on a pad and get the 'thumbs up' from the driver. Don't get in until you have agreed the price. Alternatively call your hotel before you set off and get them to send a Taxi for a fixed fee, the driver will be waiting for you in the arivals zone with your name on a board.
4 - From Pireus to the bus terminal just use common sense and agree the price before you get in, write it on a pad and get the 'thums up'. Often when hailing a Taxi at Pireus the driver has asked if we will share with a 'no-luggage' local. This is quite common. Feel free to say no. Mostly we have said yes and had no bad experiences. You can get a bus direct from Pireus docks to the airport, it's cheap but takes hours.
Always designate a price as mentined and make sure they are a legit taxi. Taxi prices are higher at night. Will be about 40 euros could be less. They might also charge extra for extra luggage so check first. Most speak english just a little hard to understand them. The people are very friendly and helpful there. You can find taxi's anywhere. Have your hotel call one when you need to go somewhere or back to the airport.
I also highly recommend using the metro while you are there its a virtual museum. I loved it. You can check out some photos at www.pbase.com/dragonflylady
