Hi Everyone I will be coming into Hungary from Bratislava. My goal is to make my way to Zagrab Croatia then to Bosnia. Would anybody else have suggestions of towns/villages/city's to see in Hungary? I will be using pub transport only. I'm very much into places that give a great ambiance feel like Egar and Cesky Krumlov. If it gives the overall feel that "wow I'm setting in old world europe", that would be great. I like museums and the normal touristy things. I'm not opposed to anything surrounding some beautiful area of a country. Any suggestions of places people enjoyed would be very helpful!
Thanks
I'm totally throwing out this suggestion all willy-nilly (because I haven't, um, exactly been to this place), but when we went to Hungary this past March we tried to work the town of Pecs into our itinerary. From what I'd read, it looked like a great place to visit. Unfortunately, we were unable to make it down that far south but it might work well for you given its geographical location. Additionally, Pecs has the distinction of being one of the selected European Capitals of Culture this year. Again, just throwing it out there...
Thanks! I'm looking for any suggestions. I will check Pecs!
You could also go to Debrecen and see a display of great horsemanship by Hungarian cowboys. We saw it a number of years ago and it was great fun and quite an exciting spectacle.
Hi There. I lived in Hungary for a few years. I lived out in a village on the Great Plain, but played tourist whenever I could.
Eger is absolutely fantastic. There is a lot to do there, although at times even it feels set up to be "touristy." (Though it mainly seems to attract Hungarian tourists and others from Central Europe). If you like wine,Szepasszonyvolgythe Valley of Beautiful Women is a great place to sample a wide variety of local wines for a very reasonable price. Combined with the castle, minarette, etc. . .but you've already chosen it, so I don't have to sell anymore. (Although I do recommend a restaurant called the Palacsinta Bar). Pe'cs is a great time too. Again, lots of history. Beautiful churches, interesting museums, great hiking in the hills surrounding the city. If you're headed south anyway, it would be on the way from Budapest to Zagreb. (If I remember correctly, it is easiest to take the bus from the train station into town if you stop here, but it isn't far) Otherwise, many people really enjoy Esztergom and Szetendre in the Danube bend. Both are very pleasant, unique towns that offer that "European feel" you were looking for. Both are most often done as a day trip from Budapest, accessible by the HEV. Sopron and Szeged are larger cities and are very nice as wella bit further afield, but certainly unique and worth a visit, given sufficient time. I won't write much on them, because they'd take you quite out of your way on the trip to Croatia. Debrecen, is nice for a few hours, but honestly, except for the big Reformatus Church, not worth the trip from BP. I think I've talked past my share. If you have any questions about this rambling or anything else, feel free to send me a private message.
