Suggestions Needed for Santorini, Greece

We will be stopping on a cruise ship in Santorini from
6 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. May I have suggestions as to what we should do and see? We love drop your jaw gorgeous sites and taking those memorable photos to bring our trip back to mind.

Is it walkable to the areas you might suggstion or should we plan on public transportation?

Keep traveling!

About any location will give the jaw dropping gorgeous sites. In many it is more shopping and eating than sightseeing. We spent part of the day in Oia which is reachable via public bus (30 mins) from Fira which is where the ship docks. Oia is more relax and prettier than Fira. Skip the mules. Around the corner from the top of the cable car you will find a number of travel agencies. Half day bus trips are available to some of the digs. On our next trip we will do that.

Small warning -- don't drink much. Bathrooms are a premium. We had a lovely lunch, big beer and expected to use their restroom prior to leaving. Doors locked. The staff's comments was, "No water." Had to get real creative after that. Also time your departure. The line for the cable car can become very long with rush back to the ship.

I am afraid you won't have much time to go outside of Fira. A lot of your time will be spent by standing in line to get up from the harbor to Fira and then back. Lines are horrendous at the time of cruise ship arrival and departure. It would be faster to walk down from Fira to the Harbor than stand in line for cable car.

Our best day in Greek Isles was spent hiking from Fira to Oia...about 8 1/2 miles of spectacular views. We are returning by cruise ship and plan to take the bus from Fira and hike back this time. We took the cable car up, but I would walk rather than wait on line. Forget the donkeys.

Charlene, for the walk to Oia from Fira, you should allow at least three hours one-way, and possibly more. The walk is by no means flat, and the heat means you need to take plenty of water and sunscreen. Allowing at least an hour to get back by bus (factoring in waiting time at Oia and the walk from the bus station to the crater rim at Fira)
I wouldn't think it achievable in the time available to you, unless you are very fit. A shorter alternative is to walk along the crater rim via Firostefani to Imerovigli, where the views are almost as good, and far less crowded than the centre of Fira. There are small shops and places to get a drink as you pass through Firostefani. You can walk to Imerovigli and back in less than two hours.

Yes do the walk to Oia and get the bus back - it is spectacular. Just wander around Fira and take it all in. It is the most divine place.
