Suggestions: 6 days in Greece or Southern Italy - 6 days Croatia

Hi Expert Travelors!!
We're going to Croatia & a mystery country June 2013 for 14 days (figuring 2 days travel time + 12 days visiting). We'd like to start off in either Southern Italy (Amalfi/Pompeii) or Greece (Crete?). Not sure logistically which country would be easiest to travel, then fly to Croatia the 2nd week. Would welcome opinions on this. We'd like to fly into Zadar or Split, via some local airline (suggestions?) My husband's roots lie in Preko across from Zadar so we'd like to stay across on the mainland in either Zadar, Sibenik or any other place that's quaint with nice beaches that we can use as a homebase & take day trips. Would appreciate any recommendations for house or apartment lodging for 6-8 people. Also towns & sights north or south of Zadar/Sibenik that are not to be missed. Many Thanks!

We have found it much easier to get from Italy to Croatia than from Greece to Croatia. The easiest way to determine if this is still true is to go to a travel website (Kayak or Expedia) and make a sample booking for Rome>Zagreb or Split, and then Athens>Zagreb or Split. That should give you your answer! It's also possible to travel via ferry from Italy (Ancona or Bari or even Venice) to Croatia ... but with only 12 days, and a final destination of Zagreb, you would probably be better off flying.

have been to Crete twice and loved the intimacy and people, stayed in small town hersonnisis. Did not go to the larger cities such as Chinia. But still owuld like to go back. Another trip stayed in Sorrento, still beautiful coastline and daytrips to pompeii

These are the places we recently visited on the Dalmatian coast, ranked in descending order of how much we enjoyed each (top=most enjoyable/most worthwhile). All were worthwhile and none were bad, but we were underwhelmed by the last few places on the list. Just my opinion, I'm sure others would have different rankings... Rab Korcula Dubrovnik Kotor Trogir Sibenik Split Hvar
Zadar If you're trying to pick between Zadar and Sibenik as a base, I'd definitely choose Sibenik (although we did it as a half day stop, so I don't know much about accommodations or restaurants there). We though Sibenik was very charming in a steep-hillside-thigh-burning sort of way (perhaps because it got no mention at all in Rick's book and our expectations were low - the opposite of Split, which gets plenty of hype but left us underwhelmed). Can't help you with beaches - we don't go to Europe for that. Connections between Croatia and Italy are plentiful; with Greece not so much.

Thanks David. Since we haven't been to the Dalmatian coastline, your opinion is super helpful!
