staying in Split for a week, Can you communte to Dubrovnik

We are planning a trip next April. Have a time share in split for a week. Want to spend good amount of time in Dubrovnik and wonder if you can reasonably commute back and forth daily to Split or should we get lodging in Dubrovnik. Any suggestion on other sites to visit from Split would be appreciated.

If you want to see Dubrovnik, I think you'll need to spend at least one night there. There's an early morning bus from Split, arriving in Dubrovnik at mid-day. You could take that bus, spend one night in Dubrovnik and take the last bus back to Split the next day. From Split, you could visit Trogir, or take day trips via ferry to the nearby islands, or visit Plitvice, as Kathy mentioned. Once you arrive, find a travel agent and see what's available.

No. Ferry schedules: http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?dpid=1304 - it takes all day one way. Now flying only takes half a day one way, but it's not direct and it is expensive. Very expensive. And then you have to go back. There are a number of islands you could visit between Split and Dubrovnik, but to my mind the single best sight is Plitvice National Park.

agree, Dubrovnik is way too far. But close to split is Hvar, Trogir, Brac and several other islands.

A week in Split is a long time. Will you have a car? We spent 2 days in Split in June, and really enjoyed it. But 7 days is a long time. However, if you had a car, you could easily go to Dubrovnik. If you have 3 or more, a car is quite economical too. I do agree that Split is not to be missed. Will you go to Plitvice Lakes? I HIGHLY recommend this. However, a car is much better for that - it is about 4 hours from Split. It would be quite do-able in a day, if you started at 5 AM - drive to PL, do the tour in 5 hours walking (quite reasonable), and then drive back - a long day, admittedly. Also you could go to Rovinj and the Istria Peninsula - we didn't go there, but I hear it is quite nice.

We will definitely have a car and so plan all those side trips. One earlier poster convinced up that "D" is more tha a day trip so I think we will plan at least one overnight. We will be coming from Genova and have 3-4 days between reservations so we could go to "D" before we need to be in split. Would need a recommendation for a good over night (0r 2) accomodation in "D". We had thought of trying to stop by treiste on the way, not sure that would work now, but anyone have any thoughts on treiste?

Trieste is a good overnight stopping place. The bus and train station are right next to each other, along the harbor. There's a TA at the station, which helped us find a great, reasonably priced hotel for the night. The harbor is really pretty, a long stretch to walk along with several good restaurants to choose from and a nice piazza. Where are you picking up your car? From Trieste, you can take a bus to Rijeka, which is a good-sized Croatian city. If you rent your car in Rijeka, you could spend a few days on the Istrian Peninsula and see Rovinj before heading down the coast to Split. Then, during your week in Split, you could drive to Dubrovnik, stay overnight, and drive back to Split the next day. Add in a day trip to Plitvice and a day trip to an island, and your week is pretty full!
