Staying in Marathon Greece for 1 Week - Suggestions on What to do

My Husbond and I will be staying at a Club Med in Marathon Greece for a week in October and am looking for suggestions on what to do. We will be then going to Paros, Santorini and Crete for a a total of 2 more weeks, so I think we have the islands covered. Besides spending 2-3 days visiting Athen sites, what other sites should we see? Day trips? all suggestions are greatfully accepted.

also, I have purchased a number of guide books for the Greek Islands, but these books do not have much info on the Mainland. Any suggestions on travel books for the Mainland?

I hear they have a great marathon, but don't let what happened to the original runner happen to you! Seriously, the site of the epic battle is not far from the village of Marathonas. The Marathonas village itself, well, there's not too much going on there for tourists. The best beach in the area is at Skhinias.
