We will be in St. Petersburg and have heard some horror stories about not being safe. Has anyone been there recently? We'll be on a cruise and would rather not use their tours. Thanks, Rosemary
I was there three years ago, and didn't encounter any problems.
Thanks
Rosemary, the areas of town tourists are interested in are as safe as most other large cities in Europe. You shouldn't have any problems.

You do understand that if you do not use a ship tour or hire a private local guide you will need a visa to enter Russia on your own. Visas are very expensive and complicated. You cannot roam St. Persburg on your own without a visa.
Thanks to all for your replies. We have decided to use the ships tours and not buy visa's. Thanks, Rosemary
