St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia in July

What is appropriate street wear?

We were in St. Petersburg last July. It was a heat wave (96 deg. f.). We saw people decked out in all manner of clothes, most of it cheaply made and not at all stylish - picture visiting Walmart.

I'm from Moscow originally and still visit family every couple of years, usually around the same time. Wear what you would wear in public in the U.S., for the most part (just don't wear PJs or sweats, if that's your thing). Jeans, khakis, shorts, skirts, along with a t-shirt or button-up are just fine. You will probably see people more dressed-up than that, but you won't stand out too much if you don't wear a pair of heels and a mini dress. I cannot comment on St. Petersburg, but Moscow gets pretty toasty in July and August. Don't be afraid to wear shorts! Khaki shorts, skirts and linen pants are a good hot-weather options. The only exception is, as someone mentioned, if you are going to a church. You will need to cover your shoulders, knees, and head. A light head scarf will do for head/shoulders, and you can pack a light, flowy skirt if you're wearing something knee-baring.

I would agree with Brad. Having been to both cities, I can honestly say that Russian style is not what we think of as "European" but more in common with Walmart. However, if you plan on visiting religious sites, then do bring something to cover up with or they will not let you in.

"I would agree with Brad. Having been to both cities, I can honestly say that Russian style is not what we think of as "European" but more in common with Walmart." But there is a huge difference between summer and winter. My impression is that Russians are just trying to stay cool in the summer, but they go all out in winter.

We were in St Petersburg last June. The weather varied quite a bit. One day was downright cold, the next, short sleeves. The evenings were a little chilly( need sleeves or lightweight sweater). And be prepared for rain. We were lucky and had only 2 days that it rained and one of them was the day we left.
