I will be in Poland with friends and would like to go to Russia--but it will be solo. Any solo female travelers who have gone to St. Petersburg? Would appreciate comments on any safety concerns or tour suggestions.
I can't really comment on the safety of St. Petersburg as a single traveler, but just for planning purposes... if you intend to take the train to St. Petersburg from Poland, it is a LONG ride. I've gone in the opposite direction. It takes about 8-10 hours to get from St. Petersburg to Vilnius, and Vilnius is 10 hours from Warsaw by rail.
Being a guy I can't speak from personal experience, but from everything I've read and heard......Russia is one of the safest places for a female to travel solo. Back in the Soviet Union era, the regime imposed a lot of equality amongst the sexes. Much of that "culture" still exists today. On the flip side, that also means you shouldn't expect any men to hold open any doors for you;)
Thank you for asking this question! I have been wondering the exact same thing such how to get there and what it's like for a solo female traveler.
I've got a buddy who's lived in Moscow for the past three years or so. She's wandered all over the place, often solo, and has never mentioned anything odd.
My wife disappeared herself to go shopping while I was camped out in the Hermitage and I never found her until dark suppertime. She didn't get head-bonked.
Can only speak for St Petersburg, but it seemed safe enough, although we were two couples. Remember the cost and potential confusion in getting a visa!
My husband and I were in St Petersburg in early June. It seemed very safe to me, but I was not there solo. It is a wonderful city and I hope you get there. If you do go, I highly reccommend that you consider a guide for some things. We used Tatyana Chiurikova. She can arrange a guide and/or a driver. She will customize any tours to suit you. We were extremely pleased. Her website is www.tour-stpetersburg.com
