I'm doing a solo trip to Budapest for 8 nights in early May. I would like to do an overnight somewhere within a reasonable distance by train (3hrs or less).
I was thinking Vienna but hotels are pretty expensive...Any thoughts? I had thought of Sopron but there appears to be some big hockey tournament while i'm there...
Oops! I meant to say the hockey tournament is in Bratislav NOT Sopron
Consider Eger: it's a very nice town, with Baroque architecture, a castle, a Turkish minaret, and a small valley ringed with wine cellars. The train from Budapest is less than two hours.
That big hockey tournament (in Bratislava and Kosice in Slovakia) is actually World Championship and it should be the reason not to avoid Bratislava but to go there and cheer our boys. They will need it.
I'd love to cheer them on but my budget limits that somewhat.
Vienna is great, and I think that it works particularly well with Budapest, but if you have eight nights you would want to use at least three for Vienna.
Agree that Vienna is certainly worth more than a day. The Schonbrunn Palace itself would consume most of your time. Eger is a neat little town and a visit to the Valley of Beautiful Women (wine caves) would be a nice afternoon, if you like wine and friendly people. Eger can also easily be accessed by bus. A third option would be to grab a ferry down the Danube to one of the little villages, ie, Szentendre, bum around the town, have lunch and take the train back.
