hi Ron, i have been to Piran about 5 times now and you can't beat the helpful staff at the Maona Tourist Office located in the main street just before you hit Tartini square. You can pick rooms up from about $40 a night or an apartment for about $100 a night. Villa Piranesi is not bad at $126 a night which belongs to the Piran Hotel.
You will love Piran, i have a cousin there, it is a very good central spot to explore Slovenia and you can even do a day trip to venice from Piran.

Rather than stay in Piran, we stayed in the neighbouring town of Portoroz. We had a car and parking within Piran seemed to be an issue with any of the apartments we had checked out on the internet. The apartment we rented in Portoroz can be found at www.vilalili.com/en. It was comfortable and clean and an easy walk down (not so easy back up !!!!) to the main street of Portoroz to restaurants. We took the bus into Piran to avoid the parking issues. It is a cute little village and definite worth a visit.
In Rovinj, we stayed at Maller Apartments (www.inforovinj.com/eng/private/detail.asp?IDSmjestaj=2230). Again, comfortable and in a quiet neighbourhood. Rovinj is a great location for exploring the Istria peninsula seaside towns and hill towns because of its central location on the coast.
