We are a family of 4, car-camping through western Slovenia as part of a month-long trip. We're trying to find an overnight "back pack" trip in or around Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps. Ideally, we would carry only sleeping bags, pads, and personal effects and stay in a hut - does anyone have specific advice on where to go? We could easily do up to 10-12 km (kids have done real backpacking at 12 miles/day in US). Thanks!
Hi Jeff! The choices in Slovenia are endless but Lake Bled is the perfect place to start. Camping Bled is right on the lake and a great place to camp. see http://www.camping-bled.com/ From there, there are easy day walks in every direction like Vintgar Gorge and Pokljuka. Lake Bohinj down the road is the starting point for more serious hiking! See 3Glav adventures who have day and 2 day hikes. The 2 day hikes usually include a stay in a hut! http://www.3glav-adventures.com/01trekking.html Then head over to Bovec for more stunning alpine scenery. Joffi Tours can help with lots of hikes in the area. http://en.joffitours.com/home/ and great accommodation at Jojo Apartments. The hiking is excellent all down the Soca Valley Heres another place to camp! www.camp-vili.si If you need more info, just let us know

It seems like narrowing it down is the hard part, right? We're avid hikers/backpackers already, so I was hoping to just book a night in a hut and head out, as opposed to involving an outfitter or guide. I only saw 5 or 6 huts listed on the Triglav NP site, most of which you could drive to . . . I wondered who books the other huts in the park (that you can see on the map), but haven't quite dug up that info yet.</p> I get the sense that we won't be disappointed no matter what we do. We found Camping Kamne on the north side of the park and Camping Danica in Bohinj (we will definitely see Ljubljana and Bled on our way in, but may not stay there). We'll likely make the drive through the park and day hike there . . . the hike in to a hut would be icing on the cake. Your advice is great - I'll go through it and see what I can find! Thanks, Jeff
Hi Jeff! Yes, just depends what route you want to take. The most popular route from Bohinj is the route which goes up to the Komna hut and back down to the lake via the Black Lake and Seven lakes. Be aware that in summer thee huts are usually are bursting point and reservations are necessary. Having said that, the huts dont really have someone sitting there taking reservations so best to email the Bohinj Tourist Office and enquire through there. Yes, there are plenty of camp sites around the NP so the choice is yours! Let us know if we can be of more help!

We'd like to avoid a super crowded hike & stay, so the Bohinj entrance sounds like it might be a bit too popular. I assume we would be able to go to one of the park museums/stations once we're there to ask for specific hiking and hut information? Or maybe I should e-mail the park and ask for a few options. Honestly, we'd prefer scenic and fewer people to a crowded summit hike. Thanks! jeff
Hi Jeff! Although the huts are busy all around the park, many people still stay they encounter relatively few people on the trails themselves! Guess it depends when you go and which trail but on the whole Slovenia is empty compared to places Austria and Switzerland. Very few people in comparison. Email them to see what their opinion is. Another exciting option to check is Logarska Dolina. Fewer people again because you can only get there by car. Cheers

Thanks! You guys are a great help . . . we're only 2 weeks away from our trip, and things are falling in place. We'll post again when we've had our Triglav NP experience . . . j
