Skopelos, Greece

Have been to a number of Greek islands but not Skopelos. A search on this site has not turned up much. Would appreciate impressions, opinions, suggestions, etc. from anyone who has been there.

I am a frequent traveler to Skopelos and nearby Skiathos. Both islands are in the northern Agean and are very green and hilly. The main attraction at both is the beautiful beaches. Skopelos beaches are rocky and Skiathos beaches are more sandy. The main town is Skopelos Town. There are many places to stay and many restaurants and bars on the waterfront. My favorite low budget place to stay is Sotos Pension (about 20 Euros per night) and my favorite high end place is Skopelos Village (ranges from 90-200 Euros per night. My favorite restaurant/taverna is Englisos. My favorite beach is Panormos. It has 2 tavernas right on the beach. You really do not have to rent a car because there is a great bus service that runs multiple times daily to all the beaches and is very cheap. It is also a great place to hike. If you like more excitement and more tourists, Skiathos is your place. Skopelos is somewhat quiet. Most people fly into Skiathos and take the Flying Dolphin boat over to the island. It takes about 45 min. You can also fly into the mainland and take a longer ferry that takes 3-4 hours. My favorite times to go are May-June and Sept-Oct. Cheaper prices and less tourists. Weather is perfect then, too.

John, You might find it helpful to have a look at This Website. There's LOTS of information there on travel just about anywhere in Greece. I believe the movie Mamma Mia was partially filmed on Skiathos and Skopelos, so you may recognize some of the scenery (if you've seen the movie). Happy travels!
