side trip to Delos from Mykonos - should we take cruise's tour?

We will be in Mykonos for one day on a cruise. The ship has a tour to Ancient Delos -- should we take it (there are 3 of us)? Should we go to Delos or just stay on Mykonos as we are on the island only from 7 AM - 5 PM (and we are "tendering to shore" from a large ship).

The tour description is below:
The small, uninhabited island of Delos was once the religious center of the entire Aegean area. Today, its archaeological ruins stand as an important historical site in Greece. According to mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo, the god of sun, light, music, harmony and beauty. According to revelations of 19th century excavations, Delos prospered for centuries due to its strategic position within the trade routes of the Aegean.
A local boat will transport you on the 30-minute ride to the west side of Delos island, which leads directly to the entrance of the archaeological site. You will walk into the heart of the sanctuary where you will see the Temple of Apollo, monuments famous for their history and architectural style, the famous dried lake with the palm tree and the unique marble lions of Delos.
After a short rest stop, continue towards the terrace of the foreign gods. The view of the archipelago from there is unforgettable. You will pass through the theater and walk into the famous Hellenistic mansions of Delos with their superb mosaics decoration the floors and walls. You will then return by boat to Mykonos harbor.
Note: Guests must be able to walk and stand for approximately 2 hours over varying terrain. Comfortable walking shoes (closed toe), a hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended. Participants will be required to walk (10 minutes) from the town shuttle station to the pier(or Vice Versa) to board the ferry bound to/from Delos since the greater portion of Mykonos is in a pedestrian only zone.

Ask yourself if you'd rather spend your day exploring Delos or strolling around Mykonos, shopping, eating, and maybe heading out to one of the beaches for some fun in the sun.

The shuttle to Delos leaves Mykonos at 10am and the last return is at 3pm. You have plenty of time to get into town from the ship before going, and you don't have to sign up for the ship's excursion. You can just go into a travel agency offering tickets to Delos. Your cruise ship will probably charge more for their excursion than you'll pay if you just do it on your own.

The cruise ship charges $65 per person (there are 3 of us).
Thanks, Lee for the reply.

Elinda, you CAN do it on your own, but Delos is hard to figure out without SOME paper in hand. It specially helps to have a decent guidebook. IF you have only Internet resources I suggest printing this succinct description: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/greece/delos and also this good map:
http://www.planetware.com/map/delos-ancient-remains-map-gr-gr105.htm

BTW I do hope that -- even tho u are going on a cruise -- you have invested in a guide, or at least borrowed some from our wonderful Free Library & Photocopied the relevant pages for all the stops on your cruise. If you have to pick just 1, recommend photocopying from ROUGH GUIDE to GREECE. Also useful is EYEWITNESS: the GREEK ISLANDS, for Its pages of vivid graphic illustration for places such as Rhodes Old Town, if that is a port where you stop. It doesn't matter if the editions you borrow are a few years old, landmarks don't change.

Thanks, Janet,
we do have great library in Philadelphia. I photocopied some insight guide pages -- it is too heavy to carry around on tours.
I will look at the rought guide and the reference you sent.

Elinda: Have you visited the bulletin boards on cruisecritic.com? If not, do so and read the posts under your port, also sign up for the roll call for your cruise where you will meet people who will be on the same ship as you. It is a fantastic resource for people cruising.

How do you sign up for roll call? I did not see that option at cruisecritic.com .
most of the reviews of our ship were from 2006, but I did see some comments on our itinerary. Thank you for the suggestion.

I've been to Myknonos on a cruise. Didn't care to visit Delos so I can't comment on Delos at all. If you opt to stay in Mykonos, check if the ship is docked or tendered. If docked make sure you buy a shutle pass from your ship, the only way into town is to walk on a terrible road without and sidewalks. The shuttle pass is money well spend. If tendered I do not know where the tenders take you to, but I doubt they dock directly in town. Check on this.

BTW, to sign up for a roll call on Cruise Critic, you must go to the "Boards" section, sign up, click on roll calls, click on your cruise line, click on the name of your ship, then scroll throught the posts to find your exact cruise. This may sound complicated, but it's not. It's very easy.

My husband and I took the public ferry over to Delos two years ago and highly recommend the trip. We enjoyed the small museum and walking around among the remnants of the ancient city was so peaceful. Sunglasses, hats, water and sunscreen are a must during the summer. We had plenty of time to see what we wanted to see in Mykonos as well.

Have a wonderful time!

We took the ship's tour and were glad we did as the ferry did not go from Mykonos to Delos on that Monday that we were in port. Our time on Delos was worthwile and we enjoyed the guided tour as well as our free time on the island.
BTW, we waited 45 minutes at the taxi stand in Mykonos with three groups in front of us, only one of whom got a taxi while we waited. We gave up and swam at the beach next to town (clear water but not a very nice view).

There are daily routes to Delos and Rinia islands (except Monday) because the archaelogical site is closed. Routes are available from Mykonos but also from other Cycladic Islands (Tinos and Naxos). From the old port and in particular from the southern pier that exists after the building of the Municipality of Mykonos departing for the following vessels are departing for delos:
