Shoes for April in Turkey

Hi, this is Emily with my first post. We are going to Turkey, April 13-23, 2011, and will spend time in Istanbul, Ephesus and down the coast, Fethiye aand Antalya. I'm wondering what to bring for a second pair of shoes. We will be doing some walking on the Lycian Way (can be quite rocky) so I bought some trail runners, not wanting to lug my heavier hiking boots but needing more support than running shoes. I need something a bit dressier for Istanbul, Ephesus, etc. Can I wear sandals there in April, or will it be too cold? Maybe a pair of comfortable flats would be better? I looked for the Merrell Barrados recommended in earlier posts but they are sold out everywhere.

I was in Istanbul last April and it was very cool in the mornings. I have a pair of Merrell Mary Janes that can be worn with socks and they worked perfectly. I also took a nice pair of comfortable black shoes for evening and air travel. The Merrell's that I have could work for night time as Istanbul is casual. I saw a pair of Naot's over the weekend that may require a second look...they too were Mary Jane's but they are quite the
fashion. Check out the Walking Store website.

Emily, I was in Turkey last April. All I needed was one good pair of walking shoes (black, so they served for evening too), and my trusty Keen sandals (Venice model). So, your Tevas will be fine for the coast.

HI Diane and Paula,
Thanks so much, this is very helpfulhadn't known if I would feel really out of place not having anything dressy at night. I've seen some of the Mary Jane-ish shoes and liked them...might consider buying a pair as they would be great to have around here too. I will ponder whether the Tevas make sense since I do tend to get cold feet!

Hi Emily! I arrived in Bodrum on April 10th and wore my Keens (no socks) during the day. BTW, I will put socks in my Keens if the streets are not too clean or dusty. Take your Tevas - you will be glad to have then on the coast.

We went to Greece and Turkey 2 years ago in June/July. Hot. Wore flip flops everywhere. Everywhere in Istanbul and Ephesus.

A good pair of walking shoes serves well year round. If you are seeking seasonal type footwear then check the weather just before you go and hope it holds out. Edwin
