Is extra car Insurance required to drive into Serbia? I am traveling in a leased Peugeot from Croatia to Serbia and my contract tells me that the lease does not cover travel in Serbia. Is insurance available over the internet that will satisfy my lack of coverage? Or are there other ways to skin this cat?
Ken
I am not sure If I unserstand your question correctly. You are not allowed to take the car to Serbia od you don't have coverage in Serbia?
I am not sure if you can buy car insurance over the interent. Usually you get it from the car rental company.
If your contract say that you can't atke the car to Serbia, the company might have some issues renting cars in sertain countries.
For exemple in 2002 when I rented a car in Amsterdam I wasn't allowed to take the car to Romania.
You should ask the car reantal company.
I am leasing a car and a Peugeot lease insurance covered all eastern countries except Serbia. I was told by the Peugeot representative that I could drive into Serbia, but I would be on my own concerning insurance. He offered this example. "If your car is stolen in Serbia, you will immediately owe Peugeot the value of the leased car". I have since discovered that a Renault lease insurance does include Serbia. Go figure. Both cars are made in France but I guess they use different insurance companies.
Obviously I leased the Renault!
Ken,
I don't understand why you talked to the Peuget rep instead of your car rental company. You do not rent from a car manufacturer, so the policies are set by a car rental co regardless brand of the car.
Bea:
I am leasing the car, not renting.
I actually purchase the car and after a set period I return the car and they buy it back. This way is considered better way if your requirements for a rental car exceeds 17 days.
Ken
I see now Ken.
Maybe that's why the "coverage" is so low.
I am not familiar with the leasing system, but since you said you would buy the car, I assume you have t provide your own insurance???
Sorry, I can't help much. Maybe others ...
"Most experienced travelers know that auto agencies do not permit driving a more costly car into E Europe because of the increased danger of having the car stolen. "
Carl,
Because one doesn't know much about car insurance, it doesn't make him less experienced in traveling. Some people just don't rent cars.
However, Peugeot is not an expensive car. I think the problem is simple the company's policies regarding some Eastern European countries. Serbia has yet to learn a lot.

If you choose insurance, be sure to ask the salesman about coverage of theft.
I have rented cars from Sixt.com and they always name the countries I cannot take the car into.
If you have already leased your Peugeot, you may have a problem. The Peugeot agent should have told you of this Serbian restriction before leasing.
Dear Carl and Bea:
I've been driving cars around Europe since 1969, the year I bought a VW Squareback, drove it around for three weeks, and then shipped it back to the US. In 1995 I did my first Purchase/Repurchase cars because as I stated in a previous post, I was going to require a car for more than 17 days. For long term car use the Purchase/Repurchase plan is generally a better way to go. The cost is less than a rental, you receive a brand new vehicle, and includes insurance coverage that is better than than you can get in the US.
The reason for my orginial post was to find out if there was any sort of short term car insurance coverage for Serbia ( I will only be there for four nights) because I discovered that the Peugeot Purchase/Repurchase plan I was considering did not include insurance for Serbia in their program. They covered Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, but not Serbia and I was trying to come up with a work-a-round so I could go with the Peugeot plan.
I then checked with Renault and found out that their Purchase/Repurchase program did cover Serbia along with Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary.
I have now arranged a Purchase/Repurchase with Renault for their Logan MCV for 28 days and my Serbian insurance problems are solved.
Thanks for responding.
Ken
