I will be spending 2 weeks in Novi Sad, Serbia this summer while my daughter attends a ballet intensive there. Does anyone have guidance on transportation, good day trips, things to avoid, etc. to help me plan. I found one guidebook on Serbia, but it lacked Rick's easy style and I have found it less than inspiring as a result. While she is in class daily, I'd like to get out and explore as much as possible. Thanks.
Avoid the border regions with Kosovo and Macedonia. Independent travel there can be dangerous. While you are in the region, you may want to spend a few days in Sofia, which is a suprisingly beautiful (and cheap) city. Avoid Skopje, it may be the worst European capital city I have ever seen. Wait, make that the worst European city I have ever seen (and I've been deep within Russia). When I was in Serbia, unfortunately, much of the country was still licking its wounds from the misrule of the Milosevic era.
