We hope to travel to Turkey and Greece in 2011. Is the period mid-Sept. to mid-Oct. a good travel time in terms of weather, open hours of sights, transportation schedules (i.e., ferries to Greece from Turkey), etc? Thanks.
Overall, yes. It can be cooler than earlier in the year but it will not be cold. Prices will be lower and tourist sites less-crowded. Ferries will still be running with frequent regularity, although not as frequent as in August. www.gtp.gr http://www.feribot.net/feribot/?lang=en Ferry schedules for next Sept/Oct won't be available until sometime next summer.
mid sep. still feel hot in athens but you're in dallas so shouldn't be a problem. mid oct. in turkey is pretty comfy but a little chilly on the water.
Just back from a cruise that stopped in Istanbul and Athens the last week of October. Sunny in both. We thought it quite warm as the day went on in Athens (high 70s, low 80s F) but the Greeks were wearing sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets! The hours for the sights were good as well.
I just got back from Greece and Turkey and want to offer a cautionary note. Blue Star ferries cancelled their ship from Santorini to Kos on October 30, and from what I hear a hotel owner told me, and I can't verify that it's true they cancel whenever they don't sell enough tickets, and after September 10 (his specific date) it's a gamble. The worst part is aside from the fact it sounds like fraud you won't find out until that day. This cancellation seriously messed up my trip and cost me an extra $400 to find alternative transportation. Please, beware of Blue Star ferries. Otherwise, I had a great trip! Beautiful weather everywhere, though one day of torrential rains in Santorini.
