Senator Haz in Eger, Hungary

Anyone have a personal review of staying in the Senator Haz? How was the food, any personal recommendations of dishes and deserts? What about the sights in Eger (Castle, Church, Minaret, Valley of Beautiful Women, etc)? Husband and I are going in September for three nights and would love to hear a personal account if you have been there, thanks!

Stayed at the Sen Haz about a month ago for just 1 night as we traveled between Budapest and Kosice, Slovakia. Great Hotel - we had reserved a quad so didn't get to stay in the old building. The new building is next door and very modern. Had a nice balcony from which to sit and look at the castle.

The food in the restaurant is good. Can't make any recommendations. We also ate at Imola Udvarhaz which is right below the castle entrance and is rated one of the top 12 restaurants in Hungary according to a poster I saw. The food was excellent and was worth the splurge.

The owner (S. Haz) was very helpful and went out of his way to prepare us a carryout breakfast since we had to leave early. It seems that the train station in Eger cannot sell international tickets on the weekend - go figure. Hence, we had to buy tickets to Miskolc, catch an early train, and then buy the intl tickets tickets there and catch a connecting train.

We did the main sights but not the minaret - we took the little toy train (not actually a train on rails) to the valley of beautiful women where the wine tasting was happening. Didn't actually try the wine from the caves as we were not too interested.

We were there on a Saturday when there is an organ concert in the Church (30 mins for 3 euros at noon). Also, there were a large number of weddings taking place and the entire bridal party parades through the center or town - makes for an interesting experience.

Lastly, my opinion is that 3 days is probably too much for Eger - 1 night and 2 days is probably enough to take in all the sights.

Transportation - we took the bus in from Budapest which was more convenient - cheaper than the train and drops you closer to the center of town. That said the cab we took to the train station was around 5$. The bus also eliminates the train change in Fuzesabony (there are direct trains but they were not convenient for us).

Thank you, Arnold for your suggestions, good to hear a personal account. We actually only have 2 full days in Eger because of late arrival and early departure.

James, I think the valley of beautiful women might depend on how much wine you drink there.(Hah!)
