Seeing Dubrovnik, when to get a tour

We are in Dubrovnik in mid april and plan to get a walking tour with one of ricks recommended town guides. My question is when in the process. We will be arriving late the first day so that is out. Someone has recommended an early morning walk on the wall. Should I do that one myself and then get the guide or plan on the guide the first thing in the morning? Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim, If it isn't too late the first evening when you arrive, I would go for a walk on the rampants then, and stop for a cocktail at the "Hole in the War" (mentioned in Rick's book). Really fantastic at sunset. Depending on when the cruise ships are in port (often the now infamous Costa line), Dubrovnik can be very busy for a few hours in the afternoon, but earlier in the morning and in the evenings are much quieter. I'm going back to Dubrovnik myself in Sept. I hope you have a great trip! (I don't know if Rick recommends any specific local guides in his new book. If so, you might try to book in advance and ask them for their opinion too. ) Cheers, Ross in Denver

Ross makes a good point about ships in port. Is there any way to find out a month in advance what large ships will be around?

I'm thinking (hoping) that any local guide booked in advance from the States is going to have a pretty good idea about the cruise ship schedules. Sunday morning was really crazy last time I was there, but I can't speak for that being consistent.
