SE Europe

I am planning a trip to Europe by myself 4 years from now and am thinking about hitting SE Europe. I am considering Turkey, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and maybe Kosovo. I do not anything about these countries but would like to visit them and see a whole new culture them I am used to. Are these countries worth visiting when I am 29 and traveling by myself. I am very adventerous, thanks!!

Yes, they are worth visiting even if you were not 29 and traveling by yourself. :) The only two of those I have been to are Turkey and Greece, but I loved my trips there. That area of the world is also cheaper than most of western Europe, so you can see more for less. Enjoy your planning!

I would NOT go to Kosovo alone. And honestly, there's not a whole lot to see here, unless you're into extreme poverty and environmental degradation. If you go to Macedonia, you don't need to spend any time in Skopje. In my opinion, this is Europe's most ugly capital city. I haven't been there, but I hear Lake Ohrid is beautiful. And there's some stunning mountain scenery on the border with Bulgaria. Bulgaria is well worth a visit. Although I last visited 9 years ago, I had a blast in Sofia. The real surprise here to me was the amazing pepper and yogurt based food.

Brendon, you'll probably find that the information on that part of Europe is a bit "limited" on the HelpLine. You'll likely get more current and accurate information by using the THORN TREE message board at www.lonelyplanet.com. If you do decide to visit Kosovo or similar countries, it would be a good idea to stay on the more travelled areas and minimize hiking unless you have an experienced Guide. Some of the countries in that area are still heavily covered with Land Mines (that will ruin your vacation, even if you are "adventurous")! Good luck with your planning!
