My wife and I will be driving from Prague to Cesky Krumlov and back again in late June (staying in Cesky Krumlov 2 nights). Can anyone suggest a scenic route for one direction, and also the quickest route for the opposite direction? Thanks
Have you looked at ViaMichelin? - They are pretty good at both scenic routes and fast routes.
I cant give you the actual routes but i can give you two land marks that will establish the routes (then find the routes on Google Maps). When traveling in one direction stop at Karlstejn Castle http://budapestflat.shutterfly.com/czechrepublic and in the other direction stop at the Zvikov Castle http://budapestflat.shutterfly.com/cz2 We did this a few years back and it was spectacular. The night shots in Cesky K. in the second link were all taken from the balcony of our hotel room in Cesky Krumlov. What an amazing little town!!!
I think all routes to Cesky Krumlov are pretty scenic. Get yourself a good road atlas (scale 1:100,000) and create your own route using county roads. The fastest route back is E55 via Ceske Budejovice, Tabor, Benesov. It's scenic, too. On the way you can stop in C.B., Tabor and castle Konopiste (very close to Benesov).
We just made this drive on Monday (coming to you from Camping Paradijs, village of Rajov, Cesky Krumlov. E55 is under serious construction, and detour arrows are unreliable. Basically, you will want to drive E55 until you're spit out onto the detour, then follow the signs to Cesky Budejovice until you begin seeing signs for C. Krumlov. I had to figure this out after losing the trail of orange detour arrows, then using my hilarious version of Czech (with lots of pointing, waving, and "Prominte!". Then I was rescued by a young guy who had spent a year in Bristol, and between the two of us, with a lot of chuckling, got it worked out. Don't trust your Garmin, but use it to tell you what the speed limits are! BTW - if you're camping, we highly recommend Camping Paradijs. Small, family run camp right on the Vltava. Stay on 39 just past the road to Rajov, then turn right just over the Vltava. Camp is much better than the signs indicate.
