We will be going to Santorini in May 2009 as part of a cruise on the new Celebrity Solstice cruise ship and would like to know if there is another way "up the hill" than cable cars, donkeys (which I won't do because of the way they are treated) or stairs. I hear the cable car lines can really be long...any suggestions. Thanks.
If your cruise ship tenders you ashore below the main village of Fira at the Old Port, then no, those are your only 3 options. But if you come ashore at the new port of Athinios then you can take a rental car, taxi or bus up the cliff since there's a road.
Thanks for the info............
The cable car is great I was just in Santorini in May, I walked down from Fira town to the port for a boat trip. I would not recommend walking up or down, it smells really bad and the poor donkeys look so sad! The cable car was great, I took it on the way back it took less than 5 mintues, I actually wished it was longer so I could enjoy the view. I wasn't one of the first off the boat, but they make sure all the cars are full and I think I only waited 10 minutes in line. They move the line very quick!
Cora, you were fortunate. Some people have to wait in line over an hour.
