If your itinerary puts you on Santorini on July 22 try to be in Oia for the Full Moonrise at 8:16pm, which coincides with the sunset, which is at 8:43pm. This is a rare event not to be missed. If you have a good vantage point you can watch both events within 30 minutes of each other. As busy as the viewpoint gets at the Byzantine Castle, this is one of the few spots where you can watch both. You can also watch it from the Kastro Restaurant, Pelekanos Restaurant or the Strogili Restaurant.
Thanks.
Full Moon before sunset? Interesting.
Yes, it is. The colors in the sky and on the walls of the villages are beautiful, and the moon is huge in the low sky. As the skies get darker and the lights of the villages come on across the caldera the moonlight reflects in the sea like sparklers on the 4th of July.
Can someone take photos or video and post it on the web?
Google is your friend. You can see photos here: http://tinyurl.com/q6harga
I would love to see this sometime. Lee, do you have a source that indicates when this might happen again in the future?
It happens every year in June, July and August, with varying times between sunset and moonrise that are close enough to make it worth checking out. This coming August 21 they will be setting and rising at the exact same time. http://tinyurl.com/l8hhnn3
Thanks, Lee! I've wanted to go back to Santorini, so I'll time our visit for one of these events.
Charlene, you can use that website link to find which month will bring them closest together. If you have to choose, go with the month with the full moon rising just after the sunset.
