Santorini and Athens late September

Hello. My husband and I will be spending 5 days/5 nights in Oia followed by 4 days (3 complete days)/4 nights in Athens. We are looking for fun, moderately strenuous hikes in each location and day tours with private guide suggestions for each location. Not really interested in cooking tours, but wine tours are fine. Is Delphi a realistic day tour - or is it too much car time for a day? Is 2 1/2 days enough time in Athens for site seeing once you account for a day-trip out of Athens? Thanks, any and all help is appreciated. Doreen

Last year we spent the night in Delphi before driving to Athens and turning in our rental car. I don't remember how long the drive was but we spoke to people who had taken the bus from Athens for a day trip to Delphi so it is doable. You could probably arrange a guided tour from Athens to Delphi or take the public bus and get a tour guide once there. Can't help you on those issues. We spent 3 nights in Athens itself which was about 2.5 days. We bought a museum pass and rushed around but we did see everything we wanted. We went to the Parthenon early (for us) as it's still hot at that time of year.

There is a hiking trail along the cliff above the caldera that begins in Oia and takes about 3 hours to reach Fira. It begins outside of Oia just past the desalination plant. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, snacks and camera. You can hike up to Ancient Thera from either the Kamari Beach side or the Perissa Beach side. There's also a steep switchback ROAD on the Kamari Beach side and I belive a shuttle van offers rides up and back.

Thank you both for your responses. Carol, we have booked a tour guide and will visit Delphi as a day trip from Athens. It appears it is very doable. Lee, we will definitely do the hike in Thira. Thanks for the info. Doreen
