sand beaches, Greek Island, 1-stop for family

We are planning a trip to Italy in April and May and are thinking of flying over to Greece for the last week of our vacation for some R & R before returning home. We are on a modest budget, and this is our first trip out of the states. Our primary needs will be to find the prettiest sand beach we can find, quiet, uncrowded, and near someplace interesting for some sightseeing. We have no ambition to cover Greece and the islands and see all the sights. I know nothing about the islands, so whatever advice you can give me will be GREAT! This will be a family trip with our sons, 12 and 15, and we'll be looking for an apartment or vacation rental to stay. Thanks!!!

You might want to consider Nafplio on the mainland, just over 2 hours by bus from Athens.

It's a great town in it's own right, with an old centre and huge venetian fortress, and has easy access to Mycenae, Epidavrus and Tiryns.

The town beach doesn't fit your bill but Karathona beach, which is a couple of kilometres south, might well do. You can walk along the coast path or get a local bus.
