im in turkey now. ill not visit the south bc of refugees. i feel safe and dont notice anything unusual in my travels in istanbul, konya, goereme, sivas, ankara, etc in this area. its a lovely country. i had the same question before coming over and was reassured all is well. common sense says stay out of problem areas. hope this is useful...

I traveled through Turkey in October with a female friend in October and saw no problems. I view Turkey as a safe country and would not feel ill at ease walking alone in most cities or villages. Any problems you may have read about are on the border with Syria. The people are very friendly and helpful, the sights are magnificent and the food is outstanding. My first visit was the RS Istanbul
in 7 days and my second trip to Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale.

I've never met more hospitable people than in Turkey. If you stay away from the eastern border, you should be fine. Even on the dolmus (mini-bus), everyone sitting near me made sure I knew when to get off - a couple of times a passenger got off with me to point me in the right direction.

Dena... although I travel a lot and am quite adventuresome I also had a few reservations before I went as I was taking my 11 year old grandson. But afer a few reassurances here we ventured off and it was a fabulous trip. The people are so friendly and helpful and we adored Istanbul. I would go back again in a minute. Again, the problem is on the Syrian border... miles away from most tourist areas. (and you should only listen to advice from people who have been there... quite a few people told me not to go..of course, they had never been...)

Thank you for all your comments and advice. I normally do not worry about anything bad happening - I love to travel too much. I consider that I am careful and use common sense. You're right about Memphis, Jeff!!
