We are arriving a few days early before the Eastern Europe trip. Recently the news items indicate unrest and protest rallies. Are there areas we should avoid when we are on our own? Thanks for your help.
Harry
Protests in Prague are usually peaceful. Remember velvet revolution and velvet divorce.
Harry, I wouldn't be worried about sort of thing at all. As the previous reply mentioned, these tend to be somewhat "low key". If a demonstration were to occur and you felt threatened, you could simply leave the area. I was in Prague last year and found it very peaceful. However, be sure to wear a Money Belt, as there will be pickpockets. Happy travels!
Yes, the Czechs are (rightly) not thrilled with their political choices right now (sound familiar?). I've spent quite a bit of time in Prague. I tend to seek these protests out -- usually kind of fun. I wouldn't worry about these becoming violent or confrontational. Prague is one of the most beautiful cities I've visited. Looking forward to hearing your impressions!
Prague is very safe compared to most American cities - just prepare for pickpockets. As a woman, I don't feel unsafe there day or night. That's something I just can't say about downtown San Jose CA - a place is that should be avoided since they cut back on the gang unit & police.
I was there 1 week ago for 5 nights. the only area I think that may seem uncomfortable if demostrators gather could be Wencelas Square. Only becuase it is a huge mainly pedistrian area where the velvet revolution occurred. It is mainly a shopping area also not really a tourist draw. I did not care for the area in general. If you stay nr Old Town Sq or on Castle side you would be very comfortable. Have fun, relax and enjoy a city that hums w/ sociability.
any further ques just send me a email.
I was also in Prague last week for 3 nights and I felt very safe. We stayed on the castle side which is very quiet. Old town is a very busy area with tourists day and night but we still felt very safe and didn't see or hear of any problems.
Go have a great time. Prague is safe.
I was in Prague 5/18-23. No visible signs of protest or any problems, and I felt safe in the main tourist areas. If you're on the RS tour, you'll love it (I just returned last night).
Husband and I were in Prague 5/17-5/23, no problems we could see of. Beautiful city, loved it!
Was just there; absolutely no problems, no protests, not even any hassle (to speak of) with homeless people/beggars, as in so many other European cities. The city is clean, safe, and a lovely place to visit.
I've lived in Prague for nearly two years and I'll admit that I'm very comfortable here. Just like I would if I were in any city, I watch my belongings. I make sure my purse is zipped and hold it against my body when on the tram or metro when it's busy. As for unrest and rallies, there was one maybe a month ago that began early in the morning and was finished by afternoon. It went through most of the main areas, but are you really going to choose to avoid them on your visit just IN CASE one happens while you're here? I wouldn't. The city is flowing with tourists now, and I don't think any of them have thought twice about going to Wenceslas Square =) You'll be fine, it's safe! Enjoy it!
