RS Best of E. Europe Tour

My wife and I are planning on the RS Best of Eastern Europe in early October. Can anyone tell me about the weather at that time of year? Also we have traveled (humanitarian work) in rural Mexico and Russia and my wife found the experience depressing due to the poverty and housing of the residents. Will we experience similar "surroundings" like that on this tour? I wasn't depressed, just blessed by the experience.

Look on pages 958 & 959 of your RS Eastern Europe guide book for weather information and also open the details page of that tour elsewhere on this web site and click on Weather in Europe.

I took the Eastern Europe tour in September a few years ago. Weather was mixed - some warm days, some cool, a few rainy. You'll probably have similar weather, maybe even a couple of chilly days in October. It's unlikely you'll encounter any severe poverty or substandard housing on the tour. The only such on my tour was when we hiked past a Roma (gypsy) village, but that stop between Krakow and Eger is no longer part of the tour. The places you'll visit are very pleasant, except for Auschwitz of course.

Thanks, This will help us pack. I visited Auschwitz in 73 and it was depressing. Thanks. Erric

Looking at the tour route, you should only skirt a few areas that your wife may find depressing (I can't speak for Hungary). Some of the out-lying areas of Prague are a little grey and drab, but you'll forget it as soon as you hit the Old Town. You may pass through some run-down industrial cities in Poland, and certainly parts of Krakow are less than pleasant. If the tour takes your through the Krajina region of Croatia, you may even see a few remnants of the war. Otherwise, I don't think you'll see anything too depressing.
