Route help Krakow

We are starting in Frankfurt landing 8am and wish to start heading toward Krakow. We have thought about maybe two hours by train then call it a day.Ideas on a town to stop?? .Perhaps then the next morning head to Prague stay a night then take the night train to Krakow. Does this make sense . We also are planning on an Eastern Europeon rail pass how does it work if you start in say a noncovered German town and end up in a covered town like Prague.Thanks

Thanks we could do 3 hours if one area has more to see than another so any ideas are welcomed
