I'm returning a rental car in Rijeka and want to go to Budapest. What is the best method of travel, train or bus? If by train, which route?

You will be a few hundred km from Zagreb and there is direct train service from Zagreb to Budapest. Takes about 5.5 hours if I remember correctly. I would be surprised if the tickets cost more than 35 euro. I would go that route.

Hello James, thank you for your advice- I see that on the map now & Zageb makes sense. My daughter just emailed me from Budapest & she said it's AMAZING! I'll be meeting her over there & am so excited about it. Thanks for all your help & insights.

Everyone knows by now that I have a thing for Budapest. I got back most recently in April and head back again in July and October.
