We will be in Krakow at the beginning of Rosh Hashanah in September. Anyone know if plans/schedules etc. will be affected?
Auschwitz will be open on Rosh Hashanah: http://tinyurl.com/6tum75u Other than the Kazimierz, the holiday will have no impact on Krakow's other sites.
There are several synagogues still functioning in Krakow, even though the Jewish community is very small. If you are Jewish, it could be a memorable experience to attend services there on the holidays.
My impression is that after WWII until the fall of communism that there were no practicing Jews in Krakow. Then after communism the people of Krakow thought promoting Jewish culture, despite the fact that they had no Jews, would improve tourism. Then in the following years because of the promotion of the history some Jews did begin to migrate towards Krakow. There are currently about 100 practicing Jews in Krakow and maybe a 1000 who have some cultural or ethnic roots in the Jewish community. Over the years I've read some interesting arguments discussing the arrangement and its one of the reasons I haven't visited yet. Im still trying to shake it all out in my own head. If you want to spend the holiday around Jews then I suggest Budapest which has a large, thriving and growing Jewish community......with its own set of unfortunate problems.
