Room types in Turkey

Hi all, We are looking for a hotel in Istanbul, and have created our 'short list'. My husband and I want to make sure that when we book a room, we request the right type of room. Can someone explain the different room types? We are seeing 'single', 'double', 'triple', etc, but many pictures seem to show a double bed in a single room. I'm gathering that we need to ask for a double room with a french bed, but maybe there are other magic words we need to use to ensure we get to sleep together and not in twin beds. :) Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks! Jan

First, get a copy of RS Istanbul Guide Book. In it he has some recommendations for hotels and B&Bs as well as definitions of the different types of rooms. We found it valuable in planning for out trip to Istanbul last summer. We stayed at the Hotel Sultan Hill which has had several recommendations on this web site from folks who have stayed there. RS book says that if you make reservations for that place, mention his book to receive a discount. We did and we were asked to see our copy of his book when we checked in. We showed it and got a discount from their already reasonable prices. Good location, food, and staff.
We will stay there again when we return to Istanbul.

I just returned and stayed at the Old City Viva. Reasonable price but not a luxury hotel. Good location and great breakfast. This trip I wanted two beds in all the hotels so there is always so much confusion that I always emailed the hotel directly and asked for what I wanted. Most responded with what they had available, but it can all fall apart when you arrive.... lost in translation! Old City was fine as we had a double bed and a sofa that could be a bed (it was fine for the child I was traveling with) Lots of the hotels in Europe simply have two twin beds pushed together to make one big bed...

We travelled for a month throughout Turkey last Sept. In making reservations we asked for a double room. We didn't specify bed type, that may be overcomplicating things. We spent a week at Hotel Sultan Hill in Istanbul. It was a great location, reasonable rates, good breakfast and airport transfer (not free).
