Romania short jaunt--car rental details wanted

On our East Europe quick trip next week, we'd like to dip into Romania from either Southern Poland/Slovakia route or if we have to, go to Budapest first. We just want a day or two in the Maramures region. We then plan to somehow ditch the car at the border (return it to Hungary if that's the best rental method) and continue to the Julian Alps and Dubrovnik. Has anyone done something like this?

Check out Lonely Planet thorntree forum. They have a lot of locals online that can give you great advise. And please make a trip report how the Maramures region was as that is where I would like to go for my next trip!

Okay, Kate, I will. We will be back on October 6 so if I remember I'll post on October 7. Look for the damage report then. Meanwhile I have a request for info in from Stay Poland, on how to get around the Tatras and Bieszczady areas with a car (and where to get that car), and how to then train across the border and pick up another one. I hope to hear from them in the morning. Meanwhile, I'll try the thorntree idea. Thanks.

Cynthia,

I don't believe you can ditch the car at the border.
last tiem when I checked to rent a car from outside Romania, the car rental agencies weren't allowed taking the car over Romania, but things might have changed in the meantime.
The best way is to rent a car in Romania. Expect slow driving thru Romania. Some streets are narrow, crowded and not paved.
Tripadvisor.com has a lot of good info as well. Many locals there.
