We will be on a volunteer assignment in June and July of this year (2010) in Sibiu, Romania. Anything special to suggest?
Sibiu is a beautiful town and one of my favorites in all of Europe. The open air museum on the outskirts of town is a must see. Allow yourself a whole morning or afternoon for it as it is huge!
I highly recommend a quick trip to Sighisoara. At night it is wonderful. If you can rent a car as there as so many gorgeous old towns throughout the region. Train travel is very difficult to reach these areas. Trains are very slow, often late but very safe. The locals are very friendly and will go out of their way to help you. I hired Peter as a guide to take me to Biertan for the day. His number and email is on the Graffiti wall for Fringe Europe. It was 25 euros for a half day and you went in his own car and he is a complete history buff.
Brasov is also worth checking out as well. The countryside in Romania is one of the hidden gems in Europe in my opinion. You will see a slice of "old Europe" here.
I used the Brandt travel guide for Romania and it was excellent.
Many thanks!
