We will be in Prague for 3 days. I plan on putting hotels and major meals on a card to get best exchange rate. Any ideas on how much to get rid of the remaining Kroney when you leave? From what I've read you don't really get a good exchange rates.
I got 4000kc ($190.20, right at the bank exchange rate, plus 1 percent transaction fee) at a cash machine in Holesevice train station for walking-around money. It was delivered in 2000kc notes, too big to buy Metro and tram tickets. Fortunately, McDonald's isn't far away, breaks 2000kc notes easily, and sits atop a Metro station.
I'm told you can get smaller notes if you ask for odd amounts, say 3800kc, but I didn't need to hit the ATM again, so can't say. When I checked out of my hotel I had about 1500kc in cash and coin and an all-day transit pass (to get to the airport), so asked if I could pay part of my bill in cash. They broke the large bills down so I would have enough to do laundry and get lunch, and put the rest on my credit card. I left Prague with one 2kc coin.
Hotel staff quoted prices in euros, so would take them (I think), and pay phones accepted both kc and euro coins. Ceska Republika seems very ready for the introduction of the common currency.
What we've done is pay our hotel in part cash, part credit card. We've never had a hotel refuse such a request. Great way to hang on to local cash until the very end. Also, American airlines work with UNICEF in collecting any unwanted money on the flight back to the US. Where the money is from doesn't matter. Great way to use up any leftover cash. Sometimes the flight attendants forget about collecting the cash, so just ask them.
