Rhodes & vicinity

We're planning our first trip to Rhodes, Greece (and nearby islands) next fall. We'll have 3 days for Rhodes and would appreciate ideas on good ways to spend them. We'll stay in old town and spend a day wandering there. But then what? Has anyone been to the butterfly valley? Lindos? A good beach? Should we get a car or use buses? Also, have you been to nearby islands? We're thinking Kastelorizo, Tilos and Nisyros. Symi looks beautiful but I've heard lots of negative reports that it's very crowded and expensive. Have you had experience with any of these islands that you'd like to share? Thanks!

i was in rhodes in sep for 2 nights. the first day i wondered around the old town and then checked out the harbor and the beach, this would probably take you a day. the 2nd day i visited lindos, beautiful place with a very nice beach. i went to turkey from rhodes by speed ferry - it's about 1 hr ride so you could include Mamaris as one more option.

we spent a day doing the old town etc. stayed at hotel cava d'oro. it was really cute with medieval theme rooms. we hired a van and driver for 10 of us and did a tour of the island and visited lindos. we saw some other ruins, a huge cross on a hill with great views, anthony quinn beach and the lindos acropolis is great. we visited symi and climbed to the church on the hill. the views are wonderful and we were lucky enough to be there when all the church bells were ringing. we stayed on a sailboat so dont know about expense of lodging but dont think food was any more than elsewhere and the harbor was the prettiest we saw.
nisyros was actually a favorite of mine. the whole island is covered in terrace walls and the thermal areas are very interesting. we rode scooters to tour and had fresh caught calamari for lunch at the waterfront.

Thanks for the replies. I think we'll rent a car for a day on Rhodes and see Lindos and the rest of the sights. We may take a day trip to Symi on another day, just to see that beautiful harbor. The more I hear about Nisyros, the more excited I am to see it. I've been in contact with some people on the Trip Advisor forum and there are several who really love Nisyros (and Tilos, as well). I'm glad to hear someone else affirm that!
