Rhodes

I'm planning a 2.5 week trip to Greece and Turkey late September through mid-October. See itinerary below. I'll be celebrating my 30th birthday in Rhodes, and am interested in recommendations on:

Mid-range Rhodes accommodations. This will be the one place for a bit of a splurge - I typically have budgeted 30-40 euros for a double, aside from planning on staying in a nicer cave hotel in Cappadocia. Any fun/unique mid-range Rhodes accommodations (no more than 70-80 euro / night)?

"Off the beaten path" Rhodes - I've done research on the island and don't think I can go wrong with plans for the birthday, but am interested if anyone has any unique ideas for what to do or recommendations on the best highlight to save for that particular day on the island. E.g., off the beaten path sites, favorite restaurants or bars, etc... The whole trip is a celebration, but I'd like my actual birthday to be a special day in Rhodes as well.

Thanks! I did go to trip advisor and found out about a good mid-range hotel called The Spot.

Always interested in stories of highlights from other's trips as far as activities go though!

Good. When it comes to locations such as Rhodes, the large number of destination experts at tripadvisor are able to specialize in a small geographical area, and in general, are going to know more than we do here. (But we're cuter)

I didn't realize that. I used this site and Rick's books only to plan a 4-month backpacking trip to Europe... Kinda like to stick with the Rick family but will be happy to branch out to trip advisor.

We'll help you all we can here, and we hope you keep coming back here to see us!

But for some locations, such as Rhodes, you're probably going to notice we don't have as many answers for you as the destination experts at the Tripadvisor.com Forums.

That may be why your question, here, went unanswered for 2 days; and I noticed last night it was unanswered and was trying to get you to someplace where they could help you.

We do better with western Europe questions. Rick only wrote his first book on Greece this year, and it doesn't cover Rhodes. The regular repliers here tend to know more about the places Rick features in his books (now that's a general statement only, and some of our forum participants here pride themselves on going places Rick doesn't feature).

The regular repliers on this forum are a surprisingly small group, estimated at around 50 people (no one knows for sure how many, but it's a small group). Our regular repliers are a hard-working and knowledgeable group but have to be more generalist, without the specialization that we see over there.

The Forums at Tripadvisor.com appear to have a large network of destination experts who specialize in one or two locations, their destination experts usually specialize in an area as small as one or two cities (for example, Florence, not just Italy).

We just don't have those kind of resources here, but we will do the best we can to help you, especially with places featured in Rick's work. And we hope you keep coming back here but also support you in your efforts to find the best information, wherever it may be located.

I really like Rhodes, the history and architecture. I stayed at three different places while I was there 5 days three years ago. Mike's Hostel, don't stay there, I managed one night. And two nights each at Pension Olympos and Pink Elephant, both very nice and in the old town and within my very small budget.

Activities: I went to Lindos for a day trip. The Sound and Light show was entertaining. The story of the Ottoman Turks is told while they light up one side of the palace. I wandered the old town taking hundreds of photos. I went to the Palace of the Grand Masters. In the new town is the acropolis and stadium. And in the new town for the well to do (not me) is a casino.
