I am moving from the USA to Turkey very soon for an extended period of time and would like to understand anyone else's experience both with the logistics of such a move (moving company, customs, cost etc) and with the best and quickest way to secure a Residency Permit so I can stay longer than the 3 months tourist visa allowance. I have a general idea how to apply for the residency permit and have talked to officials briefly at the Foreigners Police Station in Ankara. What I don't clearly understand - as I get widely varying answers - is how long after applying for the permit will it take before I receive the permit. Some folks tell me I can get it at the time I turn in all the proper application forms and documents - others tell me that it can take 2 months or longer. If I can only be in Turkey for 3 months on a tourist visa - it would seem precarious if the Residency Permit does not arrive until just before (or after!) that time. Any advice is appreciated.
