Renting a car in venice and driving to dubrovnik

we want to rent a car in venice (and return it there 2 weeks later) and drive to dubrovnik...the road from split to dubrovnik goes through a small area of bosnia. So far the car rental companies i've contacted say we can not drive their car into bosnia...even this small area on the way to dubrovnik...anyone have recent experience with this issue? we will be going in may 2013....thanks..woody also...what insurances and toll stickers should we get from the car rental agency in venice ...we will spend a few days in the ljubjana area of slovenia.

Hopefully someone that has taken the drive can better report back, but just looking at a map shows a ferry from Ploce to Trpanj and then you drive down the finger of a peninsula on highway 414.

Let the rental company know of your intention to drive into Croatia and Slovenia and ask them if you need any additional insurance. As far as toll stickers go, if you won't be venturing into Austria, you will only need one for Slovenia, Croatia and Italy have regular toll booths. For Slovenia, a 7-day sticker costs €15, a monthly sticker costs €30. Make sure to apply it to your windshield before driving on a highway in Slovenia, otherwise you may be fined if caught, you can buy it in Italy at most service areas along the highway towards Slovenia.
